Background of the Study
Semantic shifts in indigenous languages represent a dynamic facet of cultural and linguistic evolution. Among the Tiv people, whose language forms a vital part of their cultural identity, ongoing changes in semantics reflect broader social transformations and intergenerational exchanges. Over time, shifts in vocabulary, meaning, and usage patterns have been observed, influenced by factors such as migration, education, and media exposure. These changes often result from contact with dominant languages, which can introduce new lexical items and alter traditional meanings (Chinwe, 2024). The Tiv language, rich in proverbs and idiomatic expressions, serves as a repository of the community’s history and worldview. However, modernization and globalization have instigated significant semantic modifications, raising concerns about the loss of cultural nuances and linguistic heritage. Scholars argue that while semantic shifts can signal adaptive innovation, they also risk eroding established linguistic norms (Ogunleye, 2023). This study examines the patterns and implications of these semantic shifts, considering the delicate balance between language evolution and cultural preservation within Tiv society.

Statement of the Problem
The Tiv indigenous language is experiencing notable semantic shifts due to external cultural influences and internal generational changes. These shifts, while indicative of linguistic evolution, may compromise the depth and historical continuity of traditional meanings. Language experts have raised concerns regarding the potential dilution of culturally embedded expressions and idioms that define the Tiv worldview (Chinwe, 2024). Moreover, the rapid integration of modern lexicons poses challenges in maintaining the semantic integrity of the language. Such transformations create communication gaps between older and younger generations, affecting cultural transmission and identity. Consequently, it is imperative to critically evaluate the drivers and consequences of these semantic shifts and to develop strategies that balance innovation with the preservation of traditional linguistic heritage (Ogunleye, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify and document semantic shifts in the Tiv indigenous language.

  2. To analyze the socio-cultural factors influencing these shifts.

  3. To recommend measures for preserving traditional semantic integrity while accommodating linguistic evolution.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key semantic shifts occurring in the Tiv language?

  2. How do socio-cultural influences contribute to these changes?

  3. What strategies can help balance innovation with preservation?

Significance of the Study
This study is vital for understanding the interplay between linguistic evolution and cultural preservation among the Tiv. By documenting semantic shifts and their underlying causes, the research provides valuable insights for linguists, educators, and cultural custodians. The findings will aid in formulating policies that support the maintenance of indigenous linguistic heritage while embracing necessary language innovations. Ultimately, the study contributes to safeguarding the rich cultural identity of the Tiv through informed language planning (Chinwe, 2024; Ogunleye, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses exclusively on semantic shifts within the Tiv indigenous language. It does not extend to other linguistic or cultural dimensions beyond semantic changes.

Definitions of Terms

  • Semantic Shifts: Changes in word meanings and usage over time.

  • Indigenous Languages: Native languages spoken by a particular cultural or ethnic group.

  • Tiv Language: The language traditionally spoken by the Tiv people, rich in cultural heritage.
